Question 4 what you learned from your audience feedback

The one aspect that most of the audience recognised was that i was missing a bag in one scene as the original bag broke after the first scene so it couldnt be in use anymore. we thought that it would not be very noticable but it clearly was. the audience overall really liked our video and supported us.

2. How effective is the combination of your product (video) and anciliary texts (digipak and advertisement)

My original idea for my digipak was a very dull and moody appearance as i thought this would add a very edgy and effective mood to it as opposed to our video which is very bright. In the end i decided that too much grey was not he best idea. So when it camedown to producing the piece on photoshop i used the same front cover picture but just the colour version of it. The preliminary task gave m a vey good idea on how i wanted my digpak and advert to look like.

I made sure that the artists name was added to the ront cover as this is a very important factor, you can regonise the name 'Y Shocker' as it also appears in the video. We had the artists name appear right at the start of the video so it will be more likey to remember it and this way the artist is also promoted even if some people dont buy his album. The artist has been used in three of the products so it is very easily recognised by the audience. the images and effects used on my digipak and advertisement compliment my video very well. what i like mostly liked about my front cover was the picture that was used. It made the cover standout and the fact that the artist looks partically crazy, says a lot about the artist. i chose to have the front cover very simple as the the image created enough effected but i also chose to add the artist name and a 'parental advisory'  label for a rougher look and to compliment the genre . Even when i was adding text to the inside panels for the 'thank you' note i had to make sure it sounded how the artist would  say it. The influence for my digipak came by looking at a variety of artists and putting ideas together. Solja boys album slightly helped me with the back cover such as the small prints at the bottom. i was also got inspired by 50cents album where he also has his hands o his head, the album also portrayed dull colours.

I believe my digipak and advert sit myaudience a lot which varies from 15 and above. i beilieve mainly rap and grime fans would enjoy this album also mainly boyswhich is why i specifically madethe colours dull as opposed to something like pink. in terms of advertisment i chose to use the same picture as i loved it, plus the image itself is veryattention grabbing so it was the best for promoting.

Question 3 How did youse media technologies in construrctuion and reasearch.
We reasearched students past work throguh vimeo and fond out the do's and donts. Watching these videos really embraced our ideas and made us think deeply abot how we were going to film every scene, and edit them. The lip sync tutorials tutorials gave us an insight as to how to get the video fottage and sing together to look as though we were singing it. this was very useful as we needed to get the syncing correct or the video would not look realistic. we were also taugt how to use camera effects such as using light during nighttim scenes. to film the footage we needed state of the art video camera which produced us with very good footage and gave a proffesional add to it. using the cameras was fairly simple and wegot the hang of it very quick. We had to make sure thatwe used the memry cards correctly because otherwise our work would of been lost. We used blogger in order to outline our ideas and plan our work.

Question 1 in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media?

Me and my group took a long time to decide which song and artist we wanted to base our music video on, in the end we decided to do Wiley Never be your woman. we knew that producing a grime song would be quite a difficult task as we had seen many previous videos of students that had produced this sort of work. We decided to slightly change the conventions of the genre of the music video. We still included a rapper but the setting was based around central London as opposed to rough looking areas which would  be a typical grime image. Our concept was based on a relationship involving a cheating man going on a journey to meet his faithful girlfriend, who has no idea about what the goings on are. We filmed in many locations such as Piccadilly Circus, London Eye, Vauxhall Bridge. The process of making the video was a very long process as we had difficulties finding the rapper which we found in the end. We thought about each scene and where and how we were going to produce them. Every scene was thought about and we tried very hard not to copy the original aspects of the video of the song we were using. For example the video included a very basic area with many estates. We chose to do the opposite to this and base it in central London. The rapper in the original video only appears for a very short moment only. We decided to include the rapper in quite a few scenes. The singer only appeared what it seems to be on a balcony very early in the morning but we decided to base our lead singer in many different locations such as on a bridge at sundown, near a lake on a very bright day.

We decided to break every convention of the genre to give it an edge and to stand out from different grime video's. We did not chose to focus on one character we had four characters included, which was a vocalist, a rapper and the two main characters the male and female which are seperate from all of them. Although the storyline is based on the male and female the rapper and singer also have their own main roles. We chose to do our scene mainly outside as we thought this would look better as opposed to having a rapper preforming on stage which would be very cliche.

Eminem Featuring Rihanna - Love the way you lie

This particular song fitted our genre of music as it was a rap song song, but the difference is that they he is an American artist. They're concept is fairly similar to ours which includes two couples on bad terms with each other. The part of the video that i really liked was the fire, but unfortunetly we could not use it in ours for health and safety reasons. There is a wide varirty of shots and angles used effectively. The setting of the song is very basic but due to the many camera angles and effects it has made to seem better. I was very inspired by the part when the couple are lying on the bed and i had to fit it in our video somehow. In the end we did and it worked perfectly. It was a difficult shot to perform as it was a birds eye shot.

Sugababes - About you now

The entire concept for our video came from this one. I have always loved this video but i wanted to base it on a different song. Never be your woman was perfect for it as it included a relationship with an unfaithful man meeting his girlfriend. As we had to include a rapper in the video a lot of change had to be done in order for everything to fit in together. The main aspect that attracted us most to this video was the fast editing and camera movements. There where high angle ho, low angle shots, establishing shots and so much more. As a group we believed that these aspects turned a video from looking simple into a well produced piece. The images below show the similar endings that we use, both girl and boy being on the same side in both images. We thought to end it like this as it ends with a clif hanger.

Tinie Tempah - Written in the stars

We included this video because like ours it contained many characters and locations. It used many establishing which we were a fan of as many are used in ours. They both involved a rapper and a singer whih told the story of the video.
These shots are very similar to eachother as they both portray the sky with a city outline in the background. Tinie Tempah's video starts of withthe camera panning around him as does ours.

The digipak that i have produced followed the convention of gime genre as oppose to our video which breaks all the conventions. I found creating an image for a grime related digipak pretty simple as i am very aware of grime music. The entire group found this fairly simple to create as we all have agod understanding of the genre. I kept the colour schemes for my digipak and advertisment fairly simple which mainly consisted of the colours grey, black and white. We chose these colours as we thought they are the best colours to use for this sort of music. I wanted to keep the album looking simple but effective and i got some great responses from my class.

Analysis of 3 digipacs

Rihanna's digipak includes a medium shot of Rihanna in a skimpy outfit in a bikini and a top . This is a convention of an R&;B artist as female artists tend to wear skimpy and sexy outfits to appeal to males. The colour tends to stay the same throughout the digipak, the colours consist of blacks, organge/gold colours with Rihanna in a creamy dress type outfit to fit the background. Her genre of music was very typical R&B and therefore she had to portray a certain image. This was one of Rihannas earlier albums when her image was much softer and less racier as opposed to her image below...
This was one of Rihanna's recent albums 'rated r'. You can see by the edgy photo and dark colours that the album is going to contain much more deeper songs. The photo and colour scheme create a moody tone for the album.

Improvement and Progress

In our video, there was one particular scene which was our romance scene in a bedroom which we had to re-shoot because of poor lighting. In the video below, it cuts forward and back to show to the difference of lighting between the shots we filmed. There is quite a huge difference and make the video even more effective!

No more filming!

Finally we have finished filming! It took a while to get there but we made it eventually. After having a few diffiulties finding a person to play 'wiley' in our video we managed to get Dennetta's cousin which was interesting to film! We also had to redo our saucy bedroom scene as our previous footage was out of focus, again we had difficulties filming our former actress Hakeena as she was unavaliable on the day meaning....me in a dusty wig! It was awful but i had to think about my grade. We done all the important bits in on day and we felt very happy that we had a lot of work done.

The last day of filming felt good! I was happy i never had to wear the same outfit again!

Rough Cut Video

Due to a lack of work done by the group, we did not have a solid rough cut video where there were enough pieces of work to give a good mark. All we had were bits of the female's journey, all of our male actor's journey, none of both vocalist's camerawork and the meeting point had not been filmed. This was quite a disaster and we had realised that we needed to get work done ASAP.

Feedback from our teachers were: 'Unorganised and need to get work finished immediately or you will not meet the deadline.' From this we have learnt that you mostly need to have group motivation and work together to achieve good work.

Location Pictures

To start off our journey finding locations to shoot our music video, we used a Bus Tour map which gave us a more detailed and larger view of tourist attractions such as 'The Embankment' and potential locations we would be interested in shooting. Also using a marker we then decided that we would start at two opposite sides of the map and make both actors gradually make their way to Hungerford Bridge which was the meeting point. Fortunately, it was a well thought out plan but yet it could take ages to do especially when our filming was in rival against the time of day since we had to be at the meeting point by twilight.

During class time, we hopped on a bus outside our college and stopped at random areas that looked attractive to us. (e.g. below we took pictures in Chinatown) We felt this would be a good place to shoot because it is well known and the idea of many people visiting and shopping around would make the video more real.

Our first location chosen was around the areas of a University nearby our college where two sets of open staircases looked appropriate to do stunts e.g. sliding down the rail banister (as seen below) The idea of beige/brown shade buildings behind behind the action looked quite effective since the sunlight hit the buildings in a nice way.

This is the view of the Embankment and the London Eye from the Hungerford Bridge which we felt would be a good landscape view for our female singer to look out to.

Pitch: (Planning)

Below shown is our Powerpoint presentation we pitched to our teachers about our ideas of concept, camera shots at mise-en-scene for our music video.

Personally our teachers were very keen on our concept which was a journey between two people where they meet at Hungerford Bridge. The one piece of useful advice that inspired us was to have both characters walk opposite ways across the screen which makes it more real that they are meeting together from two different places.

Animatic Storyboard

Dennetta: Below is our group's animatic which I had patiently taken my time to create using programme Final Cut Pro which I found as a hard task. Using a mixture of medias such as photo still shots from a digital camera and hand-drawn pictures of our camera shots, I had put them together in sequence on a timeline bearing in mind that our group were not still 100% sure about our concept. I think this work really did pay off as it was '...very detailed and showed good thought of technique through the concept' according to my Media teacher. Other pupils in the class also claimed it was a great piece of work of which they were longinh to see in full completetion.

Plan B

Disaster strikes as look through some of the footage we have shot and put it together as a match cut, it looks a mess! Or so me and Denneetta think. But not to worry as we have moved on to plan B which only existed as of last week when we decided to make do with what we have until the rough cut deadline and then re- film the entire scenes all over again on the same day, and not use as many locations making it look confusing. We hope that this looks as good as our animatic as we had a certain image in mind that we want to carry out but so far it has not happened.

Moodboard: (Planning)

Our moodboard is a way of summing up all the information behind the music video such as the camerawork, costume, audience, gender and location. This work was simply created with printed pictures and magazine cuts outs of images that could relate to the genre of music we are doing. Overlapping images as a collage made it quite effect and colourful to the audience too. Below are close-up shots of each section.

This shows the kind of shots and angles we would use for the music video such as close-up shots, longs shots from various angles. Close-up shots will be suitable for the female singer as it will emphasize on make-up and beauty towards the audience. Long shots will be suitable for the male singer to show-off an urban clothing style and for specific movements towards the camera.

I think with this particular genre, I think the music video will be aimed at youngsters from urban areas, preferably males but both genders from ages 13-25. I have used examples of certain artists that would listen to this type of music e.g. Estelle, (a well known R'n'B/Grime UK artist) Tinie Tempah (a rival upcoming Grime artist) and young secondary/college children.

Preliminary Task : Photos & more ...

The Group had been given a preliminary task focusing on the skills of lip-syncing. We were given a song 'Oh-What-Wow' taken from the 60's Disco genre.
We felt this was a good opputunity to find our strong and weak areas between us in practical media work.

The only props given were a CD Player, a sheet of lyrics, filming lights for the green screen and a class room to work in. Very basic but yet our group was keen to show off their talents. We also had decided to go that extra further and use a fan present in the classroom for the effect of the singer's hair blowing which makes it just a little bit more glamourous.

One of the main things we did was to give ourselves a main role each so there was equal workload put out from all of us. Fabian Berisha (Camera man) had good skills using a variety of shots when it came to filming so it was an instant role given. Miguel Carrillo (Photographer) as a shy person didn't want to stand back and observe so a simple yet effective role of taking snap shots with a digital camera helped alot for out blogging.

Ira Bytyci (Actress/Singer) who has the most confidence in front of the camera took the role of lip-syncing which she did a fantastic job of : showing off her moves which made the video even more eye-catching.

Dennetta McKain (Director) who is always full of ideas a keen leader in group work took the role of director since she had an instant image in her head when given the task.
During the filming she made a quick 5 minute storyboard of each shot and action used for the lyrics which made it more easier to follow. For example for the lyrics 'Oh-What-Wow' the simple movement was a pointing arm to the audience.

Miguel Carrillo (Photographer) as a shy person didn't want to stand back and observe so a simple yet effective role of taking snap shots with a digital camera helped alot for out blogging.

An example of a shot used was a high angle shot where the camera man stood on the table above the singer gaining a great shot. A variety of shots were used such as mid shot, close-up shot, high angle shot and long shot but mainly mid shots were used.

Final song choice

As you can see our song choice wa never be you woman by Wiley. Our concept to the video is completely different to what the original producers have portrayed, for starters my group and i will be filming the video during night time in comparison to the orginals morning shoot. We came up with our concept by watching the Sugababes video 'about you now' and we altered it in to making it orginial. Our video will be a narrative involving a person miming the lyrics whilst Wileys video did not have a narrative what so ever.

Review of previous students music videos

Video 20

Mise en Scene - I love the location that has been used which is on a bridge, it could be used as a metaphor for a new life as the main character is cheating on their partner. The night tie theme also appeals to m as not many of the videos that we watched were filmed duing night. Also the fact that it was the girl that wa cheating on the guy was great!

Narrative Structure: Very clear that it is Linear. Through lyrics e.g. Begging you and through action as the actors draw their hands to the audience which engages them.

Audience: I believe this is aimed for people aged between 15-25
Out of 60 i would give this group about 57 as i enjoyed watching the video, it was made to look very realistic and i found that it was a good choice of location. Also as it was filmed and produced by one person i was extremely impressed that they produced such a brilliant piece of work.

Short list of potential Songs (Planning)

Below are a few songs that we came up with before finalizing to one song:

- Emilie Goulding - Starry Eyed
When you think of the name Starry Eyed, automatically we thought of a theme coloured silver with stars and special effects. With the singer, a woman portrayed as La Roux with the hairstyle and style of clothing would be perfect but wearing glasses that were shiny with a glow which makes it more retro but imaginative. This video would be simple but effective as there would be numerous different shots of the singer, fast-paced edits to the rhythm but no action to complicate.

- Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars
A black and white theme like Amy Winehouse's Back to Black would be ideal for this slow paced song. A simple location e.g. the London Fields and hopefully terrible weather to give it a calm or unhappy mood. The actor would be dressed in in a big black duffle coat walking to keep it vague but many close-ups and angles.

- Wiley - Never be your woman
In comparison to the original video, it is set in an urban area mainly using buildings and quick paced edits of different people. However I felt we should do the video in complete binary opposition with a night time setting, a linear narrative between two actors. In specific parts of the song, fast-paced edits to the rhythm would be necessary and effective towards the audience.

- Emilie Goulding - Guns 'n' Horses
Similarly to our Starry Eyed ideas, take away the theme of silver and keep the colours suttle but hot e.g. soft red, orchard and light orange almost like a sunset. The actual song sounds quite relieving so a lot of sunlight and diffrent shots in different scenary would be good.

- Katy B - On a Mission
Since the orginal video was very simple of the singer on stage in a concert, we thought of a story with the singer getting ready to go to a club because that would suit the genre and beat of the song which is quite groovy.
