Vladimire Propp

IVladimir Propp was a Russian critic who created a theory based on the structure of stories. With this theory of narrative, he examined 100's of folk tales to look for similarities. He came up with 8 different character roles in these stories and these were: The Villain (The person who will go all out to defeat the hero). The Hero (The person that progress and goes on a journey). The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object). The helper (helps the hero with the quest and journey that they are going on). The princess/princess (the person the hero may end up with and the reward for the hero and the person who the villain schemes against). Her father (rewards the hero). The dispatcher (sets the hero on his/her way to carry on in completing their goal). The false hero (Takes the credit for all of the hard work of the hero to impress other characters).

Andrew Goodwin theory

Key features in music videos. They are:

A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
Genre-related style and iconography present.
Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.

Many of these features are present in all music videos, depending on the genre of the song and the aim of the record company/artist.

Analysis of a music video

The video that i chose to analyse was Everybody's fool by Evanesence

The narrative of this rock/pop video is the girl character has lost her identity due to her modelling and T.V career. She feels lost in a world of lies where nothing is as it seems and she just wants to get away from it all.Repsentation here shows that the character is weak as the majority of the time in the video she is crying or looking depressed. This song has a deep message about mind control, about how media uses celebrities to control the minds of the audience and the celebrities themself are just a puppet who follow orders and are more sad and depressed than meets the eye.

The media language used in this music video consist of close up's and editting into different scenes which look completely opposite to the previous for example moving from a bright coloured and happy looking scene to a moody, dark and depressed enviroment. This works very well as it tells the characters story from different points of er life and it shows her from her best to her ultimate worst, it speaks her feelings. The mirror which she hits and shatters work very well as it looks very realistic and dynamic.

Previous Student Video Analysis

The video that i decided to analyse was the highest ranking video in the DVD that we were shown. The video was an amplification as the lyrics matched what was being done in the footage. The genre of the video was pop. The media language used in this video consisted on a variety of shots and the edit used in this footage really worked and looked fantastic, the video was filmed in full colour but then bleached so that only red appeared on screen, this was a good effect which really went good with their music genre. In the video there were random people holding up signs of the lyrics, this made the video look more amplified and professional. The representation of the actress was very vivid and made her stand out from the crowd as only her lipstick and earrings stood out in bright red colour on screen.

Lip Synch Tutorial

The lip synch tutorial gave me and my group a good understanding on how to create a amature low budget music video with plenty of potential. our tutorial started with a brief description of final cut pro as we used it for the creation of our thriller trailer last year. to see if we could still use the software we tryed to merge/edit someone elses footage into a music video, this experience was crucial in our understanding of the creation of a music video.

We were given 1:30 minutes to shoot a music video, the song was distributed randomly by the teacher, this was a great opportunity for us to use our skills from the previous year and knowledge from this year to make a superb music video with a wide variety of different shots and angles. in our trial we used whatever we could find in the environment around us, in this case we used a fan to create a very cool image of our actress, as we were based in the media room we had a green screen as a background and used the studio lights to create the effects we wanted.

Now that we had or footage we could begin editing it, for this we used final cut pro. in the editing we used all of our shots in appropriate points of the song, this made our video illustrative as when the lyrics stated you she would point at the audience. the editing was easy to get used to as you had to start all of the footage from a specific point in the song and then cut bits off.

Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp was a Russian and Soviet formailst, Propp was born on the 17th of  April 1895 in St Petersburg to a German Family. Propp attended St Petersburg University for five years.

Propp's Narrative Structure

Propp stated that in folk tales scentance structures were broken down into analyzable elements. Propp used this method by analogy to analyze Russian fairy tales. By breaking down a large number of Russian folk tales into their smallest narrative units, or narratemes, Propp was able to arrive at a typology of narrative structures.

Ever since propps discovery of narrative structures in tales, his theory has been used ever since, for example in the video i selected the song's lyrics are broken up into verses, these vreses make the song longer and make it more enjoyable for the audience.

Example and analyse video's of amplification, disjuncture and illustration

Amplification

Red Cafe- put it in the air

this video is an example of illustration because the artist uses hand gestures as he sings along, the hand gestures/ singnes follow up with the lyrics of the song.

Illustration

Blink 182- Adams song

This video is an example of illustration, this is because the artist is singing the lyrics and the video is synced to that the footage matches the lyrics, however the lyrics do not match the action on the footage.

Disjuncture

This video is an example of an disjuncture video, this is because the lyrics do not have anything in correlation with the video.

Lip Sync Tutorial (planning)

Through our activity of 'Lip Syncing,' I learnt the key steps to make a music video which consist of :
- Singing rather than miming as this is easier to edit the mouth movement
- Using at least four different types of camerwork e.g. Extreme close up, Mid Shot, Pan & Track

With Final Cut Pro of which I used to edit our camerawork, I learnt an easier way to create cuts creating an effective music video. This is simply by taking a word from the song e.g. 'My' and editing the amplitudes where you then mark and drag this down to the timeline. Cutting your recorded piece of Lip Sync at the same point and placing on the timeline makes it effective and leaves you almost with a music video in sync. This was quite easy to me since I use these types of programmes to make music mixes where I have to cut music at a specific point.

On the other hand, learning the new technique was a challenge as I was tempted to do things my own way. But I learnt it in the end and it paid off since we made quite a satisfying video clip for a preliminary task. Also using a handheld camera was difficult since we were not allowed to use tripods. However this did help us use the oppurtunity to get used to hand-held cameras. My last difficulty would be cutting my camerawork at the specific point to align with the soundtrack as our actual camerawork sound was not as clear as the original song soundtrack.

I would say the newest tools I learnt to use on Final Cut Pro was firstly the razor tool of which you use to cut up your work making different edits. I found this tool quite fascinating as you could cut anywhere you wanted, have fun with it and still make an effective video. The other tool would be the mark tool which helps you select a specific point of the soundtrack to put in sync with the recorded piece on camera.

In comparison to my thriller movie, this was way easier. I used many quick cut edits and fast panning in my thriller to suit the genre which was expected. In contrast, since my lip sync task was to a 70's Disco song, longer length edit cuts were appropriate to the genre and mood. The whole technique to a music video could take you a day to edit since the cuts are repetitive and a razor tool helps to create this. Whereas in an opening to a Thriller Film, it is different footage used throughout it almost like a ongoing timeline that never changes.

On a last note, I would say that I am very proud of what I achieved in my first task because the edits and camerawork was on point but if the mise-en-scene was up to scratch too, it would have been even better.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory (research)

From Andrew Goodwin's point of view, he feels that the traditional narrative structure/functions do not apply to pop videos of today. They follow the simple technique of the videos being built around the song/lyrics, the singer being both the narrator and a character in the action and direct eye contact between the singer and the audience.

With typical pop videos, a lot of repitition is used in the music video and in the lyrics e.g. Justin Bieber's chorus "Baby baby baby oohh" which is repeated througout the chorus. The audience then become familiar with the lyrics and the dance moves used. This same part would be used in a advertiement, TV or on radio where it becomes recognizable with the audience.

Some videos use the three types of relations between songs and videos which is called illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration - The video tells the story through the lyrics and dance is also used to express feelings/mood.

Amplification - Videos of new meaning that don't contradict with lyrics but add layers of meaning.

Disjuncture - Connection between lyrics and video but a secret message behind it e.g. Michael Jackson's Man in the mirror

In most pop videos, females dress and present themselves in a sexual way towards men e.g. Beyonce who wears tight revealling clothes to attract a male audience. Close-ups of specific parts of the body are common and eye contact between the audience and the singer make a connection. However in some videos, they are specially dedicated to movie promotions and strictly use film footage.

A good music video that represents the idea of no narrative function but sexual desire is Holly Valance - Kiss Kiss

The Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos. They are:

- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

Analysis of a Music Video

The music video which i am going to analyse is "Opposite Of Adults" by Chiddy Bang.

The narrative of the music video is about the artist going back to his childhood and recapping things from the past, the lyrics illustrate that the artist grew up in a rough neighbourhood but then ended up being a star in the music industry. The genre for this particular music video is hip hop, this is because hip hop consist of rap and DJing.

The media language used in this music video consist of enlargements on the heads of the actors, this effect/edit is used to make the actor look younger, so that the audience can see what life must have been for the artist as a child. The effects in this video make the video look more appealing to the viewer and have a big connection with the lyrics in the song as the artist goes back to his childhood. In the video there are many features of edit which make the video look cool, the rewinds and flickers when the artists are doing skills on their skateboard. In my personal opinion the effects make this video look very modern and in a way amusing and entertaining as it brings you/ the audience back to your childhood.

The video produces a representation that the artist is a child and in most of the video the artist is shown with a big head, this imposes the effect that he is a child. the artist is in a cardboard knight costume in one scene this also supports the statement that he is a child playing sword fights with friends.

Preliminary Task: Lip Syncing

Ira: As i appeared in the lip sync tutorial i learnt that singing the lyrics looked would look much more effectful rather than miming as sometme it looked overexaggerated. We also learnt how to use handheld cameras as tripods were not allowed. As this was the first time we were working in our new groups we ad to get used to listening to eachothers ideas and co-operating. Learning how to use the handheld camera's was essential as we tryed various techniques such as low angles, close ups, medium shots. We also involved a fan to make my hair fly all over the place which i was not a fan of!

What i believed to be the most challenging task was actually holding the handheld camera without shaking hands, Fabian would of had the most trouble with this as he was filming. I also had difficulty using the new tools on Final cut pro such as the razor and mark tools i found them really confusing at first and got extremely lost in what i was doing. But i managed to get the hang of them at the end.

In comparison to the thriller we did last year i found this much easier to edit and fun.

Dennetta: This was my first time doing a practical preliminary task on lip syncing which is something that we do on an everyday basis. As director, I had to plan all the shots we were going to use which I had written all on the white board provided. I also helped our singer create dance moves and give a lively vibe so that when we did film our task, it would look as professional as it could be.
As this role I was quite an inspiration but yet the person that put together all the ideas and produced a great piece of work which I also additionally edited using Final Cut Pro.
I must admit that I really enjoyed this task and it gave me a good taster for what was coming next!

Example Disjuncture

Kid Cudi vs. Crookers - Day 'n' Night

In the video we see the artist Kid Cudi in a 24 our store going through stages of hallucinations at being bored or tired, the lyrics though are about the solidarity of a human being going though social problems. The lyrics also highlight nightlife as a clear relief to stress yet in the video there is none or no clear relation as there is more of a focus on a mans desire or perfect scenario with the female gender.

Example Amplification

Taio Cruz - Break Your Heart ft. Ludacris

The video title being Break your heart one would think that the video would show sadness or negativity yet the video instead contradicts the usual emotion of sadness at having your heart broken yet is seen as a form of freedom. Both Taio Cruz and the girl shown as the girlfriend during the course of the video, kiss and dance promiscuously with other people without remorse or sadness only to in the end of the video re unite with their partner.

Example Illustration Video

Dizzee Rascal - Bonkers

Dizze Rascal's Bonkers shows lyrics of being crazy (bonkers) clearly as the video beggins where we see him in a ficitional world which has connotations of being bonkers. When the lyrics divert to realate being bonkers not as crazy but as wild the video then depicts a fun lifestlye where on screen there are people dancing enjoying themselves.

Summary of Andrew Goodwin's Theory (Research - Summary)

Andrew Goodwin's theory is that traditional narrative formats are not carried out in music videos and differentiate to that of films and novels;

1. Traditional narrative structures (normality-problem-resolution) are not present in pop videos

2. The narrator and character are portrayed by the artist

3. The viewer is almost allowed to be involved as the artist constantly focuses on looking at the camera grasping he audiences attention, differentiating from a normal story like scenario.

Also Andrew Goodwin says that although pop videos do not have complete closure like that of a 'resolution' there is sometimes a climax or a repition then fading away to finish off as and ending.

Bashy - I See People Analysis

The video to "I see people" by Bashy is a unique and distinct video, it that falls under the category of British Hip Hop/Grime.
Narrative - The video begins and we are set in Urbis, Manchester in a museum area, it immediately becomes a focal point that both the lyrics and the video are linked. The lyrics used as almost as a canvas to bring out views and opinions, the video is a compilation of African American history and a revolutionary theme is highlighted.
Genre - The genre is Hip Hop/Grime the beat and evident British accent along with the fast paced lyrics make obvious, the video doesn't follow the traditional Hip Hop video with cars, women etc. yet focuses on the lyrics as the video makes race the prime focus.
Representation - from the representations gender, age, ethnicity, place etc. it is clear that ethnicity is the main purpose of the video, by showing images and short fast paced clips the viewer has an insight into African American history with the Black Panthers along with Malcolm X and the fight against racial discrimination.
Media Language - The fast tempo goes along to the beat fast paced keeps the on screen images interesting and insightful, recording of the TV set as the images come up shows it as media coverage almost as a representation where you see it as if it were at the time of happening. There are a lot of zooms which again allows the viewer to be interested with the images.

Examples and Analysis of videos that follow amplification, disjuncture and illustration (research)

Illustration: Spice Girls - Stop

Due to embedding disabled by request, I have posted up the link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpPyBXMxeb0&ob=av2e

Specifically in the chorus of this song, the lyrics are almost like commands e.g. "Stop right now" They use strong verbs towards the audience. However with these lyrics there are specific typical dances that the Spice Girls use. Once again with the phrase "Stop right now," the dance move is a hand out like a police officer would do in everyday life. These are simple dance moves that have been created through the lyrics. This gives the video and song together a joyful mood and very jively.

Analysis of a music video focusing on the 4 key concepts of narrative, genre, media language and representation (research)

Since I didn't want to chose a popular song of the recent UK Charts, I thought about a video from my childhood which became No.1 for a period of time. I felt Craig David's 7 days (2001) video would be a good choice of song.

Narrative:
- Linear - It clearly explains not only through the action itself but in the lyrics e.g. "In front of me stood a beautiful honey with a beautiful body.." and at this point in the video is a woman of which the singer is attracted to. With the singer, he is not only in the actual video acting but he is telling the story to other people which states he is the narrator and the video is a personal preference.

Genre:
- UK Garage/R'n'B - Craig David is known for his different beats but that still define to a UK Garage/Dance/R'n'B genre. I would say with this beat and smooth sound, it suits the R'n'B vibe .

Media Language:
- Mise-En-Scene - For the singer, good style of clothes and very casual for the setting used. The woman's clothes go well with the idea of a beautiful lady that the singer has just seen as she has this long brown hair and tight clothes which shows her sex appeal.

- Camerawork - Repitition of footage used througout reminds the audience of the narration happening. Excellent use of different shots and angles which makes it effective. Lots of close ups are used between the singer and the woman to show their attraction towards each other.

- Edits - Not to the beat of the song but when needed as it tells the story e.g. when the woman askes for the time it cuts to his watch. There is no set technique but good use of edits

- Representation - This video shows the audience about the behaviours and attitudes with men of today towards women. Obviously within a man's life they will normally see somebody on they street that they find attractive and move in for a conversation or a date. Craig David has used a typical scenario in this case.

Actual Wiley feat. Emile Sande - Never Be Your Woman Video

This is the actual video performed by Wiley.

We decided to create a completely different concept to the video altogether seeing as we did not want have any comparisons its original counter part.

My Blog For Media Music Video

Welcome to my Blog 2010-2011

The year has started and we have been given a task that i know i will find enjoying. Our group are Dennetta, Fabian, Ira and finally me. The artist's song we have chosen is Wiley, the song we have chosen is Never Be Your Woman.

Wiley is a British rapper that is most commonly associated with the Grime genre. We chose to use his song as we found it fit our demographic, our group could relate to the song well. After having all heard the song we all came back and agreed, the song is fast paced and this would allow us to use fast editing with quick shots. The song was a perfect template for our video to have diverse shots with intriguing angles and varied camera shots.
