Andrew Goodwin's Theory (research)

From Andrew Goodwin's point of view, he feels that the traditional narrative structure/functions do not apply to pop videos of today. They follow the simple technique of the videos being built around the song/lyrics, the singer being both the narrator and a character in the action and direct eye contact between the singer and the audience.

With typical pop videos, a lot of repitition is used in the music video and in the lyrics e.g. Justin Bieber's chorus "Baby baby baby oohh" which is repeated througout the chorus. The audience then become familiar with the lyrics and the dance moves used. This same part would be used in a advertiement, TV or on radio where it becomes recognizable with the audience.

Some videos use the three types of relations between songs and videos which is called illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration - The video tells the story through the lyrics and dance is also used to express feelings/mood.

Amplification - Videos of new meaning that don't contradict with lyrics but add layers of meaning.

Disjuncture - Connection between lyrics and video but a secret message behind it e.g. Michael Jackson's Man in the mirror

In most pop videos, females dress and present themselves in a sexual way towards men e.g. Beyonce who wears tight revealling clothes to attract a male audience. Close-ups of specific parts of the body are common and eye contact between the audience and the singer make a connection. However in some videos, they are specially dedicated to movie promotions and strictly use film footage.

A good music video that represents the idea of no narrative function but sexual desire is Holly Valance - Kiss Kiss
