Analysis of a music video focusing on the 4 key concepts of narrative, genre, media language and representation (research)

Since I didn't want to chose a popular song of the recent UK Charts, I thought about a video from my childhood which became No.1 for a period of time. I felt Craig David's 7 days (2001) video would be a good choice of song.

Narrative:
- Linear - It clearly explains not only through the action itself but in the lyrics e.g. "In front of me stood a beautiful honey with a beautiful body.." and at this point in the video is a woman of which the singer is attracted to. With the singer, he is not only in the actual video acting but he is telling the story to other people which states he is the narrator and the video is a personal preference.

Genre:
- UK Garage/R'n'B - Craig David is known for his different beats but that still define to a UK Garage/Dance/R'n'B genre. I would say with this beat and smooth sound, it suits the R'n'B vibe .

Media Language:
- Mise-En-Scene - For the singer, good style of clothes and very casual for the setting used. The woman's clothes go well with the idea of a beautiful lady that the singer has just seen as she has this long brown hair and tight clothes which shows her sex appeal.

- Camerawork - Repitition of footage used througout reminds the audience of the narration happening. Excellent use of different shots and angles which makes it effective. Lots of close ups are used between the singer and the woman to show their attraction towards each other.

- Edits - Not to the beat of the song but when needed as it tells the story e.g. when the woman askes for the time it cuts to his watch. There is no set technique but good use of edits

- Representation - This video shows the audience about the behaviours and attitudes with men of today towards women. Obviously within a man's life they will normally see somebody on they street that they find attractive and move in for a conversation or a date. Craig David has used a typical scenario in this case.
